What is the Junior League of Spartanburg (JLS)?
The Junior League of Spartanburg is a non-profit organization of women committed to promoting voluntarism, developing the potential of women, and improving the community through the effective action and leadership of trained volunteers. As part of the Association of Junior Leagues International, Inc., we are one of 292 Junior Leagues located in the United States, Canada, Mexico, and the United Kingdom. The League’s purpose is exclusively educational and charitable. We reach out to women of all races, religions, and national origins who demonstrate an interest in and commitment to voluntarism.
Who belongs to the JLS?
The most common characteristic shared by members is that they are women committed to contributing to our community. The JLS members are a diverse group composed of both married and single women, many with children and many who work full-time, part-time, or are currently stay-at-home moms.
Why should I join the JLS?
Membership in the Junior League of Spartanburg provides many benefits. The most significant is the personal satisfaction that comes from making a positive contribution to your community. The Junior League empowers women through leadership training and developing action in the Spartanburg community, all while building relationships with a diverse group of dedicated, talented women. You will learn about the Spartanburg community and how to collaborate with other organizations to achieve a common goal.
As a member, you will receive training that can sharpen your skills in areas such as public speaking, public relations, budgeting, facilitation, team building, fundraising, advocacy, volunteer coordination, and program development.
Should you move out of the area, you can transfer your membership to another Junior League.
Isn’t the Junior League really just a social organization?
No, the Junior League of Spartanburg strives to fulfill our mission statement, while focusing on projects supporting our charitable endeavors. The social element is one of the many benefits of a League membership, but it is not our primary purpose. Our Membership Enhancement Committee schedules a variety of social events throughout the year that are optional to members.
How much time will I devote to the JLS?
We are an organization that promotes volunteerism, therefore, each of our active members volunteer in the community or on a committee for approximately 20-50 hours each year. There is also a 12-hour service shift that is completed within one of our fundraising projects, currently our annual Santa’s Shoppe event.
What is my financial obligation?
Active members of the Junior League of Spartanburg pay annual dues of $110. Provisional Members pay additional for the Provisional Course, so the total amount due for a member’s first year in the Provisional Program is $150.
Will I attend meetings?
As in most membership organizations, the Junior League of Spartanburg holds monthly meetings to conduct Junior League business and announce upcoming events. At most meetings, a guest speaker is invited to address members about a current topic such as health, personal growth, or financial issues, or we may have a member from one of our community partnerships speak about their agency or current projects. We hold seven General Membership Meetings per year, and with a requirement to attend at least five. First year members also attend two training sessions, held in September and October, to learn about the JLS history, volunteer opportunities, leadership development opportunities, and the many ways we are able to serve our community. Members are also invited to attend the Provisional Installation in December and the Officer Installation in May.
How do I find out more about the JLS?
We invite you to attend one of our New Member (Provisional) Interest Meetings, generally held during the summer months. Designed specifically for prospective members, it is a wonderful opportunity to get to know the JLS – who we are, what we do, and the many ways we have impacted and continue to impact the Spartanburg community. Membership packets will be available, and you will have the opportunity to complete the paperwork, if desired.
If you are unable to attend one of these events, please contact our Membership Chair at email@example.com to find out more information about becoming a member.
We also encourage you to visit the Association of Junior Leagues International, Inc. to learn more about the history and benefits of membership.
