The Junior League of Spartanburg was proud to “stir up” the Junior League’s Kids in the Kitchen initiative. The goal of the program is to empower youth to make healthy lifestyle choices and to help reverse the growth of childhood obesity and its associated health issues. In showcasing the initiative, the Junior League took part in two events that encouraged kids to prepare healthy meals and educated them and their parents regarding nutrition and healthy choices. On March 18, the Kids in the Kitchen team combined efforts with Chartwells Food Service to bring recipes and nutrition tips to the children and families of Chapman Elementary School during their Physical Activity Fair. As education is the first step to making a lasting change in children’s futures, the team provided demonstrations related to the preparation of healthy snacks and motivational activities to support the mission of healthy lifestyles. On March 22, at the Easter Bunny Breakfast the Kids in the Kitchen team provided parents important nutrition tips and easy to make recipes for snacks that were both tasty and affordable. The Association of Junior Leagues International (AJLI), supports the Kids in the Kitchen program with a website, www.kidsinthekitchen.ajli.org. The website includes bilingual recipes, tips on nutrition, fitness and healthy lifestyles as well as an interactive “Kids' Corner” with an online nutrition game.

The Junior League is proud to announce its 23rd annual Mini-Grants Program for Spartanburg County teachers and students. This program was started by the Junior League in 1986 to encourage creativity in teaching and to give teachers financial support to initiate curriculum-enhancing projects that would not be possible without additional out-of-school funding. Teachers may apply for individual grants up to $600, or team grants up to $1,000. THE DEADLINE FOR ALL APPLICATIONS IS FRIDAY, JULY 11th, 2008. Applications are judged anonymously by a review committee composed of teachers, administrators and community leaders involved in education. The panel considers the following factors when evaluating proposals: creativity, benefit to students, degree of student involvement, efficient use of funds, and adaptability of project for use by other teachers. You may visit the Junior League office if you would like to read the applications that were awarded funding last year. If you have any questions, please e-mail Jennifer Walker at jensno81@gmail.com, or contact Cathy Lewson at the Junior League office at 583-5842 or junleagu@bellsouth.net.
